UCLA Hammer Museum
2002
These five walls were my first solo painting show. I painted them in five relentless weeks of basically living at the Hammer and was completely happy with all five – a miracle, just when I needed a miracle. I imagined the window pieces, Horse 1 and Horse 2, as precious porcelain figurines, part of the original Armand Hammer collection. The indoor pieces: Seed, Phallopia, and Bloom were the three debut titles of my notional line of Abstract Superhero comics. The Seed was a tiny superhero, like The Atom or Ant-man, whose powers were in the nature of unpredictable long-term influence. He/She had a complex interdependent relationship to The Bloom, who had the power to cause situations to suddenly expand in gorgeous and complex folds. Phallopia was the leader of a Superhero team like the Avengers. The members, from left to right on the long wall, are [one I can’t remember], The Afterbirth, Mr. Pockets, Phallopia, and The Husk.
